A Penny Saved is a Fortune Earned: Otha Anders’ 45-Year Journey

Otha Anders, a supervisor on the Jackson school board, made headlines when he rolled into a bank with a dolly loaded with 45 years’ worth of saved pennies. The sound of clinking coins turned heads, and Anders’ remarkable story began to unfold.

Anders, a devoted family man and man of faith, had been collecting pennies for nearly five decades. What started as a fun hobby grew into an obsession, with Anders believing that every penny he found was a sign from God to be grateful. He would often say prayers over the pennies, using them as a reminder to stay thankful.

For 45 years, Anders stored his pennies in five-gallon plastic water jugs. He estimated that he had collected hundreds of thousands of dollars, but he was eager to find out the exact amount. When the jugs were finally brought to the bank, employees had a unique experience, using hammers and axes to cut out the pennies and counting them on a coin-counting machine.

After five hours of counting, the total amount was revealed: $5,136.14. This staggering sum worked out to approximately $114.40 per year. Anders’ remarkable collection could have even bought him an “old car” after 45 years!

However, Anders had more practical plans for his savings. He used the money to settle a dental bill and then sponsored a family trip and made donations to his church. Anders was happy to use his savings for something meaningful, and his story serves as a reminder that even the smallest actions can add up to make a big difference.
