A local woman corroborated this claim, explaining that José has been writing the word “HELP” in various locations for years. “He’s the one who puts it all the time,” she said. “He writes it everywhere […] it’s been years.” While she confirmed the messages were José’s work, she did not know why he continued to write them.

These accounts have shifted some of the speculation toward the idea that the messages are not a direct plea for assistance in a trafficking situation but instead reflect the struggles of one individual. Still, this revelation has not lessened the concern for José or the broader issue of homelessness and mental health in Los Angeles.
