Longtime Anchor Out At MSNBC

Veteran journalist Andrea Mitchell, 78, is leaving her role as a full-time anchor at MSNBC, wrapping up nearly two decades at the helm of Andrea Mitchell Reports. Her final show is set for Friday, February 7.

Mitchell previously signaled her departure last fall, stating that her daily program would conclude after the presidential inauguration. While stepping away from her MSNBC anchor chair, she is not retiring from journalism.

She will continue to work at NBC News, where she is the network’s chief foreign affairs correspondent and chief Washington correspondent.

“After sixteen years of being in the anchor chair every day, I want time to do more of what I love the most: connecting, listening, and reporting in the field, especially as whoever is elected next week is going to undertake the monumental task of handling two foreign wars and the political divisions here at home,” Mitchell announced last year on October 29.

“So, after the inaugural next January — I’ve asked for the opportunity to continue covering those stories, but from a different vantage point — still with NBC News and at MSNBC and still as chief Washington and foreign affairs correspondent,” she said on air. “Just not on the schedule of a daily show.”

NBC News leadership praised her in a memo to staff, highlighting her status as a leading and reliable authority on both foreign policy and domestic politics. “Andrea remains one of the country’s foremost and most trusted experts on foreign policy and domestic politics,” the note stated.

They also acknowledged her significant impact over nearly five decades at NBC News, expressing their gratitude that she will continue to be a vital member of the team. “Her contributions to NBC News over the last 46 years have been invaluable to the network, and we are so pleased that she will remain an essential part of the News Group for years to come.”

Her tenure at Andrea Mitchell Reports spanned 17 years, covering major political and global events. A longtime fixture at NBC News, Mitchell built a reputation as one of Washington’s most experienced reporters.
