NEW: CNN Debunks Dems, Says Agents Were Right To Cuff, Subdue Senator Padilla

The instant U.S. Senator Alex Padilla (D-CA) turned his shoulder towards the agents who were attempting to escort him from a news conference, he should have anticipated that trouble was imminent.

This was the assessment of Alex Campbell, a security correspondent for CNN, who indicated that the body language of the Democrat signaled to U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s protective detail everything they needed to understand regarding his presence at her news conference on Thursday. Padilla was forcibly removed from the venue and subsequently thrown to the ground and handcuffed.

The shocking footage of a sitting senator being restrained like a criminal sparked outrage; however, Campbell remarked to anchor Kaitlan Collins that the manner in which the incident unfolded was not surprising given Padilla’s actions.

“It’s easy to perceive this as a singular event, but from a law enforcement standpoint, we are actually observing three distinct incidents that occurred within a brief timeframe,” he clarified.

“Initially, you have the DHS secretary addressing the media. This was not a question-and-answer session, and she was interrupted by someone speaking very loudly, prompting her security detail to confront what we now recognize as the senator. At that moment, he was to be escorted out. Interrupting an ongoing event is unacceptable.”

However, instead of adhering to the instructions of Noem’s team, Padilla advanced, provoking the physical altercation, Campbell noted.

“The second incident, in my opinion, occurs when officers are attempting to lead him out, and he then turns and walks back towards and somewhat into those agents. At that juncture, from the perspective of the security detail, we are removing this individual against their will.

Had it not been for Israel’s assault on Iran, Padilla’s treatment would have dominated the front pages of every news outlet across the country on Friday. Responses varied from indifferent to furious as senators, political parties, and the White House attempted to manage the narrative surrounding an extraordinary situation.

“Anyone who examines this – anyone – anyone who views this, it will make you feel nauseous. Observing this video and witnessing what occurred is a clear indication—an indication—of totalitarianism. This is not the behavior of democracies,” stated Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) from the Senate floor on Thursday.

Republican responses were comparatively subdued, with Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) requesting time to ascertain the facts regarding the events that unfolded.

“We aim to understand the complete context of what transpired and respond as we would in any situation of this nature involving a senator, striving to collect all pertinent information,” Thune remarked, noting that he has already conversed with Padilla to hear his perspective on the matter.
