Hamptons Residents Scramble to Escape Raging Fires

Wildfires are ravaging eastern Long Island, prompting urgent evacuations. Flames near Sunrise Highway have forced road closures east of exit 62, with more expected.

Residents fled with little time to spare. Tanya Layburn, a local mother, escaped just in time, describing the panic.

Governor Kathy Hochul has pledged resources, including helicopters, while strong winds up to 35 mph threaten to worsen conditions. With humidity at 30%, fires are spreading rapidly.

Volunteer firefighters report multiple structures burning, including a pool company and a storage facility. The full extent of the damage remains unknown.
