Just give me one gift… the next morning he woke up alone…!

It was their 10th anniversary — the kind of milestone Daniel and Lily used to dream about when they were young and broke.
But that night, something felt different.

Dinner was quiet. Lily barely touched her food, her eyes distant.

When Daniel asked, “Are you okay?” she forced a small smile and whispered,

“Just give me one gift… something that’ll last forever.”

He chuckled nervously.

“You already have everything, Lily. What could you possibly want?”

She looked at him for a long moment — then said softly,

“I just want to be remembered right.”

He didn’t understand what she meant.

They kissed goodnight, and she fell asleep in his arms.
He thought tomorrow would be another ordinary day.
But it wasn’t.

 The Empty Bed

When Daniel woke up the next morning, the bed beside him was cold.

At first, he smiled — thinking she was making breakfast, or maybe went for her morning walk.
But the house was silent.

Her phone, keys, and purse were gone.
On the nightstand, a small white envelope rested on his side of the bed.

He opened it.
Inside was a single photo — the two of them smiling years ago, holding hands on a hilltop — and a note that read:

“You gave me a life full of love. Now I’m giving you peace. Don’t come looking.”

Daniel’s hands shook. He ran outside, shouting her name — but she was gone.

 The Letter

Days turned into weeks.
The police said she left voluntarily. There was no sign of danger — only a trail leading to a bus station, then nothing.

Daniel stopped sleeping. He replayed every word she’d said that night.
“Just give me one gift… something that’ll last forever.”

Then, on the 30th day, he received a call from a small town clinic two hours away.

“Mr. Collins, we found a sealed letter addressed to you… from a patient named Lily Collins.”

He drove there immediately.
The nurse handed him a worn envelope with his name written in Lily’s handwriting.

Inside, Lily’s final words were simple but devastating:

“Daniel, I’ve been sick for a long time. I didn’t want you to watch me fade away.
My gift to you is memory — not misery.
When you remember me, smile. That’s all I ask.”

 The Gift That Lasted

Months later, Daniel opened a small café in their hometown — the same spot where they had their first date.

He named it “Lily’s Gift.”
On the wall, he framed that old photo from the envelope.

Every morning, before unlocking the door, he whispered:

“I remember you right.”

And somehow, every sunrise felt like her gift —
The one that really did last forever.
